How to Fix a Computer That Turns On But Displays Nothing?

If you see lights on the computer case (CPU Box), hear fans running from inside, and even hear sounds, but nothing at all shows up on your screen, then you need to check what’s the problem.

There are various possible reasons for your computer’s monitor not turning up. We have tried to list all the possible causes which make your computer’s screen go blank even when your CPU is functioning. Let’s see all those in detail here:

  1. Before you start on more difficult and lengthy troubleshooting with the rest of your computer, make sure your monitor is working properly. Check the power cable of your monitor whether it’s properly plugged in or not.
  2. Double check that your PC has fully power cycled. Put differently, ensure your computer has entirely reset – ensure that it’s coming on from an entirely powered-off state. Many a time a computer will seem to be not working when really it’s just having problems restarting from either the Standby/Sleep or Hibernate power saving mode in Windows.

Note: You can shut down your computer completely while in a power saving mode by pressing and holding the power button for 3 to 5 seconds. After the power is entirely off, turn on your PC and test to see if it will boot without any trouble.

  1. Try to listen the beep sound on your PC and probably if you understand the beep codes, you can find the exact problem in minutes. A beep codewill give you a very clear idea of exactly where to look for the cause of your computer turning off. If you don’t resolve the problem by troubleshooting to the particular beep code, you can always look further to find out and resolve the problem.
  2. Clear the CMOS (Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor, or CMOS, characteristically refers to a battery-powered memory chip in your computer that stores startup information). Clearing theBIOS memory on your computer’s motherboard will reverse the BIOS settings to their factory default levels. A BIOS misconfiguration can stop your PC from being starting up the way it should be.
  3. Make sure that the power supply voltage switch is set properly. If the input voltage for thepower supply is not proper then your computer may not turn on fully. There’s a good chance that your PC wouldn’t turn up at all if this switch is incorrect but an wrong power supply voltage might also stop your computer from starting correctly in this way too.
  4. Resetthe whole lot possible inside your PC. Resetting will reinstate the various connections within your computer and is very often a “magic” fix to troubles like this one. Try resetting the following and then see if your computer starts to show something on screen:
    • Reset all internal data and power cables.
    • Reset the memory modules.
    • Reset any expansion cards.

Note: Remove and plug in your keyboard and mouse as well.

  1. Reset the CPU only if you believe that it might have come slack or might not have been set up appropriately.
  2. Check for reasons of electrical shortsinside your computer. This can be a cause of the problem when the computer powers off by itself or couldn’t start at all.
  3. Check your power supply properly. Just because your computer’s fans and lights are working does not mean that the power supply on your CPU is functioning properly. The PSU (Power Supply Unit) inclines to cause more troubles than any other hardware inside the CPU and is often the cause of a computer not starting properly or getting restart intermittently. The best advice is to replace your power supplywithout delay if it couldn’t pass any test you perform. If you replace your power supply keep your PC plugged in for 5 to 10 minutes before turning it on, this gives time for some recharging of the CMOS battery, which may have been drained due to inactivity of the power supply earlier.
